You probably wouldn’t expect an innovative app to come from a mobile operator, and if it did you’d probably expect it to be exclusive to customers of that operator’s network. ON Voicefeed , from Orange Vallée, the research and development department at France Telecom’s Orange Group, flies in the face of conventional expectations by actually being rather good, and open for anyone to use. This iPhone app is billed as ‘Smarter voicemail’, and is best thought of as a turbo-charged version of Apple’s own Visual Voicemail. It’s just been updated with a range of UI tweaks, so I took the opportunity to take it for a spin. Read full article |
Most of you will agree when I say that one of the coolest features of Google+ is Circles, which lets you create groups of people to share specific things with, rather than sharing with everyone in your network by default. Today I came across an iOS app that basically has the same system in place, but for voicemail. It’s called On Voicefeed and it lets you build groups (family, friends, work, girlfriend/boyfriend) and set personalized voicemail greetings for each of those groups. Read full article |
You wouldn't greet your girlfriend in person the same way that you greet your boss. If you do, well played sir - so long as she's hot. So why treat everybody the same when it comes to voicemail? Orange Vallée (an Orange led initiative for start-ups) doesn't think that you should and, as such, has today's App of the Day in the App Store, ready to take over your standard answer-phone service. Like other personalised voicemail apps that we've featured on Pocket-lint before such as Hullo Mail, On Voicefeed lets you take the answer-phone setup a step further by pulling in a few extra features. With On Voicefeed it's all about personalisation. You can record different messages that will play to different contacts if you're unavailable, meaning that you can be all mushy to your lady, and super professional for your colleagues. It may seem the only way to improve voice mail is to do away with it. But an app called “On Voicefeed,” which lets you customize messages for different callers, makes voice jail a bit more palatable. When you download Voicefeed, which is available free for the iPhone, all of your contacts show up in the app. Your contacts can then be sorted into groups. They initially show up in the “everyone else” category, which means they will get a generic message that you can record. You can also type it in and let a robotic voice speak your message for you. I am a fan of visual voicemail, because I like to be able to browse and select the messageI would like to hear first, and the Apple visual voicemail solution on the iPhone 4 was pretty much doing the job for me. Additionally, getting voice mail directly in my email inbox is my number one must-have feature, I used to get this from the YouMail service with my previous smartphone. I came across ON VoiceFeed at DEMO, and I can tell you, this application is going one step beyond your regular mobile voicemail. Read full article |

As that point approaches, we'll need even better apps to organise ourselves in social media. But they may be arriving already. Leggett points to On, a social media aggregation system for mobile phones, as another example of something that's on Android already, before other mobile platforms. Owned by Orange, but open to anyone on any mobile network, it is principally available on the web and Android via lifeisbetteron.com. Read full article |
If Giles Corbett ran Facebook, you get the feeling that there wouldn't be any of those privacy issues that have been dogging Mark Zuckerberg for most of 2010. Born in London, he gained a degree in Politics and Economics from the London School of Economics and did as a stint at INSEAD, the grande école that is the de rigeur finishing school for the French political class. He is currently in charge of "disruptive innovation" as the head of the ON project at Orange Vallée, the "skunk works entity" (as he describes it) of massive telecom Orange (193 million customers in 32 countries). The BBC has also benefited from his ability to foresee the future of--well, the future, really. Read full article |

Giles Corbett, top man at Life Is Better ON, makers of ON Voicefeed, did an excellent presentation at Demo recently. The video is now live on Youtube and offers an excellent introduction to their visual voicemail service.
I’ve been testing it for quite a while and I have to say I am particularly impressed at the ability to offer my friends, family and business contacts a unique and customised voicemail greeting. And it’s ridiculously easy to use. Read full article |
The competitive threats to network operators are well documented: legacy voice traffic is migrating to VoIP providers such as Skype, data traffic is expanding beyond available capacity (but without a corresponding revenue increase) and users’ primary address books are relocating from the phone to social networking services such as Twitter, Facebook and Gmail.
Orange is experimenting with a new approach to sustain its competitive position in this difficult landscape, launching a service called ‘ON‘ through its Orange Vallee incubator unit. Read full article |

Rather curious tale over on our sister site, All Things D, by Ina Fried of a defensive play by Orange of an app that improves upon the iPhone's built-in voicemail. It is due to launch in France, the U.K. and U.S.
"At Demo on Monday, Orange plans to show off ON VoiceFeed—a program that lets users create custom greetings for individual callers or groups of callers. The idea is to be able to leave a generic message for the masses, while offering something special to co-workers, loved ones or other groups." Read full article |
Orange Vallée, which is a development centre for France Telecom’s Orange Group, unveiled ON VoiceFeed app for iPhone to “enhances exchange with family, friends, colleagues and any contact within the phone.” The application does that by allowing users to create customized groups and personalized greetings, while also incorporating text to voice capabilities.
For example, a user can inform his work colleagues, via one personalized greeting, that he is stuck in a meeting, and at the same time send a different greeting to his wife that he misses her and will be home late. Moreover with text to voice capability, users can type the message on their iPhones only to have the text converted into a voice message. Read full article |

ON Voicefeed definitely delivers on its promise. The customizable greetings are easy to use and I actually had fun making them for some of my closer friends and relatives. You have the option to record a greeting, use the standard greeting, or even input text and have it read to your caller in a variety of accents and languages. Groups can be made by dragging and dropping your contacts into the group files, it’s so simple! Read full article |
